Deadly crash on I-25 near Trinidad

All lanes have reopened on interstate 25 between Trinidad and Walsenburg following a crash that killed two people.

According to Colorado State Patrol, a 2000 Toyota 4Runner was traveling northbound on I-25 when it went off the right side of the road and collided with a delineator post. The Toyota continued northbound and the driver steered hard to the left, causing the vehicle to rotate counter-clockwise as the vehicle traveled back across the highway and off the right side of the road again. The Toyota then went airborne for a short distance and ended up in the median, rolling twice.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 84-year-old Lamar Schweitzer of Conroe, TX, was restrained at the time of the crash and transported to Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad. Schweitzer died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

The passenger of the Toyota, identified as 73-year-old Linda Schweitzer of Conroe, TX, was also restrained at the time of the crash, but died as a result of her injuries.

State Patrol says they do not suspect that alcohol, drugs, or speed were contributing factors of the crash. The driver may have fallen asleep, according to State Patrol.

As of 11:30 a.m., all lanes in the area of mile marker 22 have reopened.
