Free grief counseling offered in wake of Aurora shooting

United Health Group out of Aurora is helping those struggling with grief following the movie theater shooting on Friday.

Twelve people were killed and 59 injured in what’s being described as the worst mass shooting in U. S. history based on how many people were hit by the alleged gunman James Holmes.

“Unexpected violence can lead to feelings of shock, grief, fear or anger,” said Andy Sekel, Ph.D., CEO of Optum’s behavioral health business. “It’s healthy to talk through these reactions with caring professionals.”

Optum’s toll-free help line number, 866-342-6892, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for as long as necessary. The service is free of charge and open to anyone. The help line offers specially trained Optum mental health specialists to help people manage their stress and anxiety so they can continue to address their everyday needs. Callers may also receive referrals to community resources to help them with specific concerns, including financial and legal matters.

“Our sympathies and condolences go out to the families affected by this thoughtless tragedy” said Beth Soberg, chief executive officer, UnitedHealthcare Colorado. “We will continue to monitor this situation and work with local officials to support the community’s needs.”
