UPDATE: Suspect Shoots Self After Police Stop

One man is dead Thursday night after apparently taking his own life during a foot pursuit.

Several streets were closed in a neighborhood near Adams Elementary while police investigated.

It began earlier in the evening on just after 7:00 p.m., after a vehicle pursuit near Prospect Lake ended with four suspects fleeing the car on foot.

The foot chase unfolded near a home on the corner of Zion and Carlsbad Drive.

Officers saw one suspect leap a fence, then heard shots fired from the backyard. One neighbor tells NewsChannel 13 that it sounded like 4 to 5 quick pops.

Not knowing if the shots were directed at them, police increased the perimeter around the neighborhood, and brought in K-9 units to assist.

Shortly after that it was determined the suspect was dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

That person, described only as a large Hispanic man with a shaved head, has been pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine an official cause of death.

The other three suspects who fled the vehicle were caught and are now in custody.

Police have not yet said what prompted the original traffic stop or if any illegal materials were found inside the vehicle.
