Man killed by State Troopers following wild chase

Authorities say an 18-year-old man was shot and killed after firing at deputies during a chase in southwestern Colorado.

Betty Benson, a spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, says the chase began in Leadville at about 5 a.m. Saturday when a deputy tried to pull Jacob Vanderbeek over for speeding. She says the Leadville man immediately began shooting at the deputy, and the chase continued through Chaffee and Saguache counties.

Benson says Colorado State Patrol troopers shot and killed Vanderbeek after his car was stopped near Villa Grove, about 25 miles south of Salida.

The investigation led to lengthy road closures along US Highway 285 Saturday.
