Teller County Sheriff’s Office continues search for arsonist

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for the arsonist who set several fires in the area in June. The fires have stopped, but authorities say their work isn’t over.

“We have a task force that is investigating these crimes,” Teller County Sheriff Mike Ensminger said. “we are still at it. We have not stopped.”

More than 20 fires were set, presumably by one person. They took place in different areas of Teller County. Seven of them happened in a stretch of a few hours. No one has been arrested, but special teams have been on alert. Sheriff Ensminger said work from several sources could be why there haven’t been more fires.

“I would like to think that it was the resources that we had and placement of these resources within the county, coupled with the collaboration with agencies around our county,” he said.

Authorities say they are glad to see no more fires, but it’s important to make the guilty party pay. Sheriff Ensminger asks people in the county to keep their eyes open.

“We are a little different than down in the Springs,” he said. “If we see somebody who is parked along the side of the road or traveling at a very slow rate of speed, that is unusual for up here.”

Even though arson is extremely serious, the sheriff’s office says you shouldn’t take the law into your own hands. If you see something suspicious, or if you know something about the Teller County arsonist, you can contact the Teller County Sheriff’s Office at 719-687-9652.
