Volunteer firefighter reflects on time fighting Waldo Canyon fire

A volunteer firefighter shared memories and pictures from the Waldo Canyon fire that he said he will cherish forever.

David Moravek is a volunteer with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

He spent nine days working 15-hour shifts. Moravek helped dig fire lines near Cascade and shared some memorable pictures with KRDO NewsChannel 13.

One of them is of Moravek feeding a fox. He said the fox came up to him, and was clearly skinny and hungry.

Moravek fed the fox part of his lunch and then saw the animal for a few days before he thinks the fox found a new home.

He said the picture has gotten international attention. In fact, he even got a note from a person in Croatia about it.

Moravek said it was a poignant moment that reminded him of the importance of protecting homes.

According to Moravek, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is always looking for volunteer firefighters.
