Many upset over US Olympic uniforms

The official uniform of the US Olympic team was unveiled, and many – including lawmakers – aren’t happy with it. The apparel US athletes will wear for the opening ceremony of the Olympics is made in China.

“The Olympic Committee should be ashamed of themselves, I think they should be embarrassed,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. “I think they should take all these uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them.”

Colorado Springs residents weren’t happy with the news either.

“From day one, the Olympics is a symbol of pride for your country,” Robert Kane said. “That’s why we compete. It’s that healthy relationship that gives Americans goose bumps when you hear the national anthem.”

Some say the issue isn’t just about pride, but also about the economy. If all US Olympic clothing and mementos were made in America, it would keep a billion dollars from heading overseas just this year.

“I don’t like the idea of shipping our jobs overseas in the first place,” said Colorado Springs resident Robert Lydzinski. “I think the uniforms can be made here. We obviously have a lot of people that make uniforms, that make any kind of textiles. Why not make them here?”

The US Olympic Committee responded to the controversy saying, “the US Olympic Team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors.”
