Police search for looters

Police are still investigating the looting crimes that took place during the Waldo Canyon fire evacuations, and the District Attorney’s office promises to come down hard on the criminals.

When information about looting first came out, Dan May, El Paso, Teller County District Attorney made a promise to the public.

“To those who may be contemplating or thinking about burglarizing those homes, you better get prepared also,” he said. “I hope you have packed your bags. We intend to evacuate you from our community and intend to do that for a very long time.”

Two people have already been arrested for looting during the evacuations. The District Attorney’s office deemed Belinda Wells-Yates and Shane Garret habitual offenders, and they will face enhanced charges if they are found guilty of their crimes. Still, police are looking for other criminals responsible for the 37 home burglaries and 28 vehicle burglaries that took place.

“Many of (the evacuees) packed in as many valuable items as they could into their cars and when they left to either go to a hotel or family, we found out that quite a few of these vehicles were broken into, as well as their homes,” said Barbara Miller, Public Information Officer for the Colorado Springs Police Department.

There is a $50,000 reward for those who can provide information that leads to an arrest. The money will be split between people who provide helpful leads. The number to call is 719-385-2222. The number is for tips on looters only, not for tips on who started the fire.
