Suspicious device determined to be inert mortar

A suspicious device found in Falcon Monday night was determined to be an inert 81mm mortar training round with training fuse.

Bomb squads from two different agencies were sent to Falcon after a jogger discovered the device. The discovery was made as the person was running along Black Hills Drive in the Meridian Estates subdivision.

That person thought the device looked like it could be military in nature. El Paso County Sheriff’s Office called the Colorado Springs Bomb squad and explosives experts with Fort Carson also responded.

Fort Carson officials say that the public and emergency personnel were never in any danger from the inert training round. The serial numbers and identifiable markings were turned over to CID for further investigation to determine the origin of the device. EOD will properly disposed of training round on Fort Carson.

EPSO tells us people living closest to where the device was found were evacuated for a time until the ordnance was deemed safe.
