Mudslide closes highway near High Park Fire burn area

Another mudslide in northern Colorado has closed a highway near the High Park burn area.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says Colorado Highway 14 is closed in both directions about six miles west of Ted’s Place after the mudslide early Monday.

The highway in the Poudre Park area was closed Friday because of mudslides and flash flooding that deposited branches, ash and mud up to a foot deep in some places.

The High Park Fire has burned about 136 square miles since June 9.

Charred hillsides are vulnerable to erosion and flooding during downpours because they have less vegetation to soak up rain, and burned soils can repel water.
