911 tape released in Broomfield officer-involved shooting

A 911 tape recorded just before a 21-year-old man was shot and killed by Broomfield police shows that family members tried to tell officers the weapon the man was holding was a plastic pellet gun.

Kyle Miller was killed June 28 in the northwest Denver suburb after police say he pointed a gun at them. His brother is heard on the tape asking the dispatcher to tell police the weapon is “not real.” The dispatcher responds “the officers are trained in this type of thing. They’re not going to go around shooting people.”

Miller’s mother, Cheryl Miller, told the Daily Camera her son struggled with schizoaffective bipolar disorder and had recently lost his job.

Police say they can’t comment on the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation is completed.
