Flash flood concerns rising near burn scar

With the monsoonal flow gradually making its way back into Colorado, there are growing concerns over flash floods in the vicinity of the Waldo Canyon burn scar.

The fire alters the chemistry of the soil, reducing its ability to absorb water. That, combined with the elimination of vegetation from the fire, causes the rain to rush down the canyon hillsides.

There is particular concern for those living along Fountain and Douglas creeks, the Highway 24 corridor, neighborhoods hit by the fire, Manitou Springs and the west side of Colorado Springs.

Flash flood warnings are issued when 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of rain per hour falls over the burn scar, according to the National Weather Service.

For more information regarding the risk of flash flooding, a public meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Centennial Hall, located at 200 South Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs.

Anybody living near the burn scar is encouraged to attend.
