Firefighters ask public to heed fire restrictions

Firefighters who have been working around the clock to fight the Waldo Canyon Fire ask people in southern Colorado to obey fire restrictions.

In Colorado Springs, fireworks of all kinds including sparklers have been banned.

According to the city’s website: “Citizens are reminded that it is a violation of City Ordinance to possess and/or use fireworks. A conviction for such a violation may carry a fine of up to $500.00 and/or 90 days in jail. If property damage or injury occurs as a result of such a violation the perpetrator may be charged with the Colorado State statute of arson.”

City officials also said that extra patrols will be out looking for violators Wednesday night.

Fire danger is high and firefighters said it is important to understand that even the smallest spark could start a blaze.

Tony Beitia with the National Incident Management Team said that even though the Waldo Canyon Fire is 80 percent contained, there are still others burning in our state and nationwide.

He said the public is responsible for understanding the risks of certain outdoor activities including riding an ATV and grilling.

Gas grills that can be shut off are allowed, but grills using wood or charcoal are banned.

Colorado Springs city officials have also asked that grills be used at least 25 feet away from all structures.

Firefighters also said smokers need to be vigilant and throw cigarette butts away in a safe canister.
