Sheriff Says Waldo Canyon Fire Likely Not Linked To Teller Arsons

The El Paso County sheriff said Monday that the Waldo Canyon fire did not appear to be linked to the Teller County arsons.

“There is a high degree of confidence with my conversations with Sheriff Ensminger up in Teller County that this would not fit the pattern of what they were seeing,” said Sheriff Terry Maketa. “They had a very good identification on the patterns they were seeing up there, this one was very different.”

Maketa said that arson was not ruled out, however, and on Monday, fire investigators called on the public for help, starting a tipline for anyone who was in the Waldo Canyon or Pyramid Mountain area on Friday or Saturday. That number is 719-477-4205.

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office said they believe an arsonist has set at least 20 small fires in about a week’s time. Small blazes also continue to spark in El Paso County. Authorities said they believe a small fire in Fountain Monday was also arson.
