Arson is talk of town in Woodland Park

Residents of Woodland Park expressed concern Friday about the threat from an arsonist.

With 20 small fires intentionally set in the town and in surrounding Teller County this week, residents worry that another fire could become more serious and grow into a major wildfire like the area’s Hayman Fire in 2002, threatening lives and property.

“I think (arsonists) are running in a team because you’re hearing of fires on different sides of the county at the same time,” said resident Tim Baysinger.

Another resident, Beverly Schrepfer, said she hasn’t slept well since the rash of fires began.

“Anger is No. 1, definitely,” she said of her feelings. “And fear — I fear, yes. My sister lost her home in Texas (fires) last year, and I know the gut-wrenching feeling it gives you.”

Some residents said they’re playing roles of security guard and detective, looking for anyone and anything suspicious. The town is especially vulnerable to fire damage because many structures are built of wood and are close to trees.

“I feel for the firefighters,” said Stephanie Witman, a resident. “The adrenaline pumping, getting to the fires — people can have a heart attack over this.”

Amid their anger, fear and frustration, residents are curious about why the arsonist is setting fires.

“Maybe it’s unhappiness about themselves, their life, or they get joy out of seeing other people suffer,” said resident Brenda Cooper. “It’s really sad.”
