Springer Fire Evacuates Summer Camp

The Sanborn Western Camp in Florissant was evacuated on Sunday.

It’s located about five miles south of highway 24, on the east side of 11 Mile Reservoir.

Sanborn is a childrens camp that focuses on outdoor education and includes a large riding program.

The 300 kids were safely evacuated to Eagleview Middle School in Colorado Springs. The camp also houses 123 horses that needed to be moved.

Maren MacDonald, riding director, said she contacted the Teller County Animal Rescue.

“They were phenomenal, truly phenomenal. It was truly amazing how many people came out I the wood work to help us trailer our horses here,” said MacDonald.

The horses were relocated to the Teller County Fairgrounds.MacDonald said the camp was able to bring most of its hay for the horses, but is getting help from complete strangers.

“People in the community just stop by with loads of hay.

The local water company even filled our troughs for us,” she said. MacDonald said she thanks the entire community for their outpouring of support.

“It was a very good example of a community taking care of each other. I hope we can repay the favor,” she said.

MacDonald is hoping to return to the camp by Thursday if more containment is made on the Spring Fire.
