Recent Disasters Depleting Red Cross Supplies
Colorado has been riddled with natural disasters in the past two weeks.
Tornadoes left a path of destruction in El Paso County, hail stones piled high in Colorado Springs, torrential rains flooded homes and wildfires have been sparking in several areas.
“I would have to say that we are about 25 percent over last year’s response to disasters within our own community,” said Catherine Barde, spokesperson for the Pikes Peak Red Cross.
Barde is currently serving victims of the High Park Fire in Fort Collins, and said the recovery process is going to be long.
“This is a long term operation. We will be sending more and more volunteers from our community up as this continues and as the shelter requires,” said Barde.
Barde said this is just one of the many disasters this chapter has responded to, and said the active season is concerning.
“This year is definitely going to be a concern going forward. Our resources have been tapped out,” she said.
Barde explained that no matter what circumstances arise Red Cross will still be able to provide food and shelter to victims of disasters, but the establishment is asking for donations.
“We are a volunteer-led organization and we are funded by the generosity of the community. We really depend on the support of the community to provide such services as we do, and we are looking at a long season ahead.”
