Robocalls Ramping Up Before Republican Showdown

A national effort to silence “robocalls” by political candidates, parties or supporters has so far fallen on deaf ears.

Zigrid Kuster, of Colorado Springs, is one of many people who contacted KRDO Newschannel 13 about getting off the robocall list. Kuster said she normally gets at least three calls per day,e stretching from the dinner hour through 9 p.m.

At the moment, most of those calls are coming in from the two candidates vying for the 5th Congressional District Republican nomination. The mail-in election will be decided June 26. Incumbent Doug Lamborn, challenger Robert Blaha and their supporters use robocalling according to Kuster.

“Last election it was Lamborn’s wife that called and I thought, ‘Good Lord, what other relatives are going to call us?'” asked Kuster.

One reason Kuster is so frustrated with robocalls is because she believes there are plenty of resources to find out about a political candidate besides unwanted, daily phone calls to her home.

“The calls started months ago,” said Kuster. “If we have to live through that from now until November it’s going to be pretty miserable.”

Kuster wishes the candidates could simply target undecided voters and believes her voting record has earned her the option she so desperately wants.

“For the ones who vote on a regular basis there should be a way to opt out,” said Kuster. “Look I’m voting for you, just don’t bother me until election.”
