County Tax Lapse Means More Taxes For CO

A state review of property taxes shows some southern Colorado residents have been paying only a fraction of what they should, and others across the state have been paying extra to make up the difference.

According to the Denver Post, the imbalance was caused by the failure of the Saguache County assessor to update the assessed value of property after new construction that should have boosted the owners’ tax bills.

Other property owners paid more than their fair share.

Tax problems in Saguache affected taxpayers statewide.

That’s because the state picked up the tab for what may be tens of thousands of dollars in school funding that it otherwise would not have been required to pay – only a portion of which will have to be reimbursed.
