Woman Killed In Early Morning Crash
A woman was killed in an early morning crash at the intersection of Old Ranch Road and Powers Boulevard. It happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police said the woman was driving the wrong way on northbound Powers Boulevard when she crashed her car into a pole head-on. Her car caught fire and officers said emergency crews were able to put it out and get the driver out of the car.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died, according to police. She has been identified as 32-year-old Jamie Heiney of Colorado Springs.
Traffic was moving in all directions just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, but two lanes remained closed as utilities crews worked to repair the damaged pole.
This is the third serious crash that has happened at the intersection in the past year. In November 2011, a 49-year-old woman was seriously hurt after crashing her car into a pole. In August 2011, two men had to be flown to a hospital after crashing their truck.
Police said it is not surprising the intersection is a hot spot for accidents, because cars often speed through it at highway speeds. Officers said one way to remedy the problem is to build an overpass.
Construction has started on bridges over Briargate Parkway and Union Boulevard, but because of a lack of funding, no plans have been set yet to build a bridge over Old Ranch Road.
Pine Creek High School is not too far from the intersection, but officers said students did not have class on Wednesday because of graduation.
