Boy Burned In Fire Back Home

A young boy severely burned in a house fire last year is finally out of the hospital.

Tyler Sabino, 10, has been fighting for his life for the past 10 months. He?s been in three different hospitals, in three different states.

Now, Tyler is back home in Colorado Springs and even back in school.

Tyler has been climbing an uphill battle since a fire destroyed his family?s home in February 2011.

Tyler and his father Tom were severely burned in the fire. Tom saved Tyler?s life when he went back inside to get him.

After the fire, Tyler was airlifted to Denver Children?s Hospital. He was then flown to a hospital in Utah until March.

Tyler was out of the hospital for three weeks, but went back to Denver Children?s Hospital after getting methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

In November, Tyler got a skin infection and was moved to Shriner?s Hospital for Children in California.

He was only supposed to be there six weeks, but he wasn?t healing.

In January 2012, Tyler got another infection, this time in his blood and lungs, and had to be put on life support.

?Everything started shutting down and we almost lost him,? said Vicki Sabino, Tyler?s mother.

After 12 days, Vicki said Tyler wasn?t improving. The doctors told her they would give him two more days and if he didn?t improve, his family might have to let him go.

?Within 46 hours, he (Tyler) did a complete turnaround,? said Vicki.

Tyler was in and out of a coma for about 36 days.

?It was pretty bad because I couldn?t eat or drink. I had a tube in my mouth and I couldn?t talk. The reason I had a tube in my mouth was my lungs were shutting down,? he said.

Tyler said he remembers people coming to see him, including his family.

?I do remember when my brothers and dad came to see me. I couldn?t talk but I was trying to communicate with my hands so I was touching their face and ears to tell them I miss them,? said Tyler.

Tyler also said he listened to Justin Bieber while in the hospital. His favorite song is “Never Say Never.” His mom believes the song was a great motivator for Tyler to push through his struggles.

Tyler returned home on April 27 and returned to school.

?Everyone has been looking out for me and being my friend,? he said.

The road to recovery is far from over. Tyler is getting hand surgery in July and next year will have a few more surgeries to other parts of his body.

Medical bills between Tyler and Tom are estimated at around $3 million.

Vicki was forced to quit her job and take care of Tyler full time. She is only getting by on Tyler?s disability and help from her parents.

If you would like to help Vicki and Tyler, a donation fund is set up at Wells Fargo under ?Vicki Sabino.?
