Bear Caught In Springs Euthanized

A bear that was captured in a Colorado Springs neighborhood on Thursday has been euthanized.

The bear was caught near Haystack Drive just east of Powers Blvd on Thursday morning. School District 11 placed two elementary schools on lock down for a short time because bears were reportedly in the area.

The same bear had reportedly wandered into the city about two weeks ago. Wildlife officers relocated it, but the bear was spotted back in the city Thursday morning.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has a two-strike policy for bears, meaning the animals can be put down if they return to an area where they might come in conflict with humans.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton says the bear showed an affinity for human trash and food and was euthanized.
