CO Civil Union Bill Passes House Committee

A civil unions proposal has cleared a key hurdle in the Republican-controlled Colorado House.

Republican Rep. Cheri Gerou joined Democrats to advance the gay rights bill out of its final committee for consideration by the full chamber.

Supporters say they have enough votes to pass the proposal, but the GOP could still thwart their efforts.

The measure will die if it does not pass an initial vote of the full House before midnight. Democrats have only hours to spare and are racing to finish debate to allow for such a vote.

Republicans have added a dose of uncertainty to the bill by passing amendments Democrats oppose.
