The Job Gong

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center off Garden of the Gods road has a unique job motivator. It’s the job gong. The gong gets rung when a job seeker finds a position. It’s in the front of the office so everyone who is looking for a job can see and hear. The person who landed a job also gets to talk about some of the strategy involved to get the position.

Sherman Swafford with the Pikes Peak Workforce Center says, “It’s satisfying to see a person who’s been out for a while and used our advice to find a job. It’s very encouraging.” On average, the gong is being rung at the office two to three times per week.

Swafford also tells me that jobs seems to be on the upswing. He says, “Things are slightly and slowly improving each month. We see more job postings.” He says manufacturing jobs are picking up, but more jobs are being posted across the board. Swafford also has this advice to those looking for jobs. He says don’t pass up jobs for what you believe is your dream job. You need to get back in the game immediately. Swafford is seeing a national trend where employers are not hiring those who’ve been out of work for months.
