Student Makes “Columbine” Style Threat

Some Rampart High School students refused to go to class on Friday over safety concerns.

Nancy Trembly said her daughter came home from school on Thursday and said a fellow student threatened to act out a “Columbine” type shooting.

“She didn’t want to go to school,” she said.

Trembly said her daughter is among several students who were absent on Friday.

“We know people are nervous … so we did put extra security at the school,” said District 20 Chief of Security Larry Borland.

Borland said a student on Thursday made serious threats and won’t be back to the school.

While he is thankful students took action and reported it, he said it’s a warning to other students that they need to be careful about what they say.

“There are things you don’t say in schools … and if you say them you’re gonna get in trouble,” he said.

Principal Pete Alvarez sent this email to parents on Thursday night:

Greetings Rampart families:

This morning, May 3, Rampart administrators and security personnel were made aware of one Rampart student who made serious threats. Several students reported hearing those threats, and those students should be commended for immediately contacting adults. The incident was investigated this morning by our school staff and the Colorado Springs Police Department. The student who made the threats faces disciplinary and legal action and is not at school. During the investigation, no items were found at our school, and at no time were students and staff members in danger. Rampart remains a safe environment and the school day routine today was not interrupted.

Thanks,

Pete Alvarez
