CSPD Homicide Solving

Colorado Springs Police Homicide Unit has pretty amazing stats to clear cases. It’s at a 90% rate, compared to the national average of 64%.

So far in 2012 there have been nine homicides. Of those, 7 have been solved, one is still in being investigated, and one turned out to be justifiable homicide.

The latest and currently unsolved homicide was April 23rd. 28-year-old Daniel Garcia’s body was discovered in the parking lot of the Whispering Pines Apartments. He was not a resident. Garcia was found shot to death in an SUV.

Sgt. Jeff Jensen with the Colorado Springs Police Homicide Unit tells me, “We are proud of that clearance rate, but at the same time, even having one case unsolved is not acceptable to us.” Sgt. Jensen says most homicides are not solved through direct evidence that links the killer to the crime — like you see on television. Sgt. Jensen says most homicides are solved by people, witnesses, and sound investigative practices.

Sgt. Jensen believes, “Sometimes people think police already have the information. Don’t make that assumption, call us.”

You can help solve the Daniel Garcia homicide. Call Springs Police at 719-444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
