Moth Invasions To Continue For Several Weeks

Social media has been swarming with complaints about the reportedly high number of moths seen around southern Colorado this season.

Experts are saying Miller moths are arriving along the front range about one month ahead of schedule.

?Usually we are seeing this closer in May than in April,? said Michael Diaz, owner of Independent Pest Control.

Diaz said the warm winter has allowed the moths to hatch earlier than usual.

As for the claims that there are more moths this year, Louise Steere of the May Bug Museum said that may not be completely unfounded.

?There are just more of them because the warm weather has allowed more to hatch and survive,? said Steere.

Steere said the moths are migrating to the cool air in the mountains, but they are making stops along the Front Range along the way. Steere said it could be several more weeks before the moths completely move out of the Front Range.

?It?ll be a couple weeks. At least a couple of weeks because there are a lot of them and we?re right in their path,? said Steere.

Diaz said his office is being flooded by calls in relation to the moths, but said there is very little pest control can do to mitigate the problem.

Diaz said the best thing southern Colorado residents can do is make sure their doors and windows are sealed tightly. He even suggested sealing edges with duct tape.

Diaz also said minimizing the number of lights turned on during evening and nighttime hours can limit the number of moths attracted indoors.

Another thing homeowners can do is to place a bowl of soapy water beneath a light overnight. The moths will become trapped in the bowl by morning.

Diaz also said, ?Get a cat. Cats love them; good protein.?
