Memorial For Fallen Soldier At Fort Carson

Staff Sgt. David P. Nowaczyk of Dyer, Ind. was remembered at Fort Carson on Wednesday.

He was killed in action on April 15 while serving in Afghanistan. The vehicle he was riding in was attacked by an improvised explosive device.

Nowaczyk was an infantryman assigned to Fort Carson’s 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Nowaczyk joined the Army in September 2005 and earned several medals for his service that include two Bronze Star Medals that are awarded for bravery or merit.

His most recent deployment began March 3. He had previously been deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and 2009.

During the memorial ceremony, SPC Nathaniel Murry paid tribute to the decorated veteran. He described his leadership as challenging, but rewarding.

“He was a great motivator. He was always pushing us to the limit. His methods were hard, but they always got the job done,” said Murry.

Even with his hardened methods, Murry said Nowaczyk knew how to maintain moral.

“He always made us laugh when the time was right,” he said.

Nowaczky is survived by his wife, Rachel, daughter, Kiley and stepson, Conner.
