Mother Upset Over D-11 Reaction To Allegations Against Carrier

One mother is upset about how Colorado Springs School District 11 treated her and her son after they came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against former Horace Mann Middle School wrestling coach, Joshua Carrier.

Sarah Humphries started home schooling her son after he made the allegations against Carrier, who is also a former Colorado Springs police officer.

She said she was surprised at how she was treated when she first told school officials. He was 12 years old then. Now he is 14.

?The moment that I called the school and told them what had happened to my son, they became very stoic and said well you need to call the police,? said Sarah Humphries.

That?s exactly what she did after her 12 year old son told her that he had been touched inappropriately by his wrestling coach, Joshua Carrier.

After the accusations were made, she went to talk to her son?s new wrestling coach.

?The first time I walked in the school, Peggy Layh saw me, the assistant principal, and she called security,? said Humphries. ?She had people surround me so when I had just walked in to ask a question they surrounded me and they crossed their arms.?

?They had acted like I was the one who had committed the crime.?

?They stood behind Josh and they defended him and they defended their own behaviors and not one time did they ever feel like they were sorry.?

She said the school?s principal Peggy Layh, who was an assistant at the time, testified during the trial.

?She said that she still didn’t even know what procedures volunteers had to do to become a volunteer,? said Humphries. ?That concerns me a lot.?

?I would imagine that somebody in her position, especially somebody who’s been given a raise, to the position of interim principal would at least take the time to figure out what who is running around her school and what business they have there.?

KRDO contacted D-11 spokesperson Devra Ashby and asked for her response to Humphries? claims.

Ashby responded by saying, ?Because of a notice of claim, the district cannot comment at this time.?

Ashby said Humphries has expressed intent to file a lawsuit against the school district.

Ashby added that Peggy Layh was recently promoted to principal of Horace Mann Middle School.
