Ice Cream Truck Catches Fire, Tires Explode

Colorado Springs fire crews responded to an early morning truck vehicle fire at the Frosty Freeze on South Sierra Madre Street.

A call came in shortly before 1:30 a.m. about two possible explosions. Neighbors said they woke up to two big bangs that shook homes in the area.

When fire crews arrived, they found an ice cream truck up in flames.

Officials told KRDO Newschannel 13 that the explosion was most likely the tires of the truck exploding.

The truck was parked in a fenced-in parking lot. Firefighters said it was plugged into a circuit that may have gotten overloaded.

Nobody was hurt in the early morning blaze and investigators said their investigation is ongoing.

Experts who work with trucks that have to stay plugged in warn that it is important to check on trucks regularly to make sure nothing is overheating or smoldering.

They also suggested having a circuit breaker that automatically shuts off when a cord shorts out.
