House Fire Displaces Springs Family
Colorado Springs firefighters have gained the upper hand in fighting a house fire in the 1100 block of Middle Creek Parkway. The home is just east of Voyager Parkway in between North Gate Boulevard and Interquest Parkway.
Firefighters said crews from Colorado Springs and Wescott responded to the call around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department, it took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire completely under control because of the heavy smoke within the home.
CSFD said the fire appeared to have originated in the basement, but the exact cause is under investigation. According to the family, there is a utility room that houses a furnace in the basement, but it is unclear whether this is where the fire began. Kim Collins was home-schooling her four children when they heard the smoke alarms. The family, and their one dog, were able to evacuate the home safely.
“The first thing she did was get the kids and herself out, and that’s just what everyone needs to do,” said Sunny Smaldino, spokesperson for the CSFD.
Smaldino said the home is unlivable, and the family will not be allowed back into the home for several days because of the damage.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
KRDO Newschannel 13 talked with Denver Collins, who was at work when his wife, Kim Collins, notified him of the fire. He was without a car, forcing him to borrow one from a colleague. Collins said his strong Christian faith is helping them cope with the loss of their home, and he said he was very appreciative for the help provided to his family by the firefighters and the Red Cross.
“You go through your priorities. The first priority is my family. Things can be replaced, and are out and about,” said Collins.
