Man Convicted Of Killing Mother, Sentenced To Life

A man accused of fatally shooting his mother in her Security home pleaded guilty to first degree murder on Thursday.

The District Attorney’s Office tells us that Rayshawn Laster will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Rayshawn Laster is a known gang member, authorities say. According to an arrest warrant, a family member told deputies she saw Laster point and shoot the gun at his mother, Brenda Taylor.

According to an arrest warrant, on Friday, Dec 30, 2011 at approximately 6:08 p.m., deputies of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division were dispatched to 413 Kiva Road in reference to a disturbance.

Brenda Taylor, 49, told deputies her son, Rayshawn, had shoved her and had allegedly choked her. Rayshawn left the house. Deputies completed their investigation and cleared the scene, the arrest warrant stated.

Deputies were dispatched back to the residence just before 8 p.m. to respond to a shots fired call, according to the affidavit.

An eye witness, Brenda’s sister, told deputies Rayshawn shot Brenda in the head.

The affidavit states that she observed the person of Rayshawn standing over his mother as she lay in her bed while talking to someone on a cellular telephone. The witness stated she observed Rayshawn pointing a silver in color handgun at the victim. She said she heard the gunshot and saw Rayshawn shoot the victim.

A neighbor told deputies Rayshawn sent her a text message that read “i killed brenda.”

A spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says Rayshawn Laster was arrested the next day without incident.
