Additional Charges Filed Against Identity Theft Suspects
Five women have been arrested over the past three months in Pueblo County, charged with identity theft.
The District Attorney’s Office has now filed an additional charge of COCCA (Colorado Organized Crime Control Act) which is a class II felony. The suspects in this case could each face a maximum of 48 years in prison.
In December 2011, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into a possible check fraud case. According to the victim, numerous blank checks were stolen from a mailbox in the Westpark community of Pueblo in September.
Investigators discovered approximately 71 checks which had been forged — totaling almost $14,000. Throughout the investigation, it was discovered that stolen credit cards had been used in numerous states including Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
Currently this investigation has identified more than 70 victims, including businesses.
Five women have been arrested: 34-year-old Jamie Wetmore, 29-year-old Laurie Cordova, 30-year-old Bree Agee, 35-year-old Ember Peaslie, and 45-year-old Guillermina Medina.
They were all arrested in and around Pueblo over the last three months. Three of them remain incarcerated. The initial bond was set at $50,000 each.
