Power Poles Catch Fire In So. Colo. During Storms

Two power poles caught fire in southern Colorado this week due to moisture, sand and wind creating the perfect storm, according to Fountain Utilities crews.

One power pole caught fire early Tuesday morning near Interstate 25 and Baptist Rd. Traffic on Interstate 25 had to be shut down for about two hours as firefighters got the blaze under control and crews worked to repair the power pole.

A second fire sparked on Wednesday morning in Fountain on South Sante Fe Drive. Power was shut off to homes in a trailer park as crews repaired the pole.

Jerry Early with Fountain Utilities said the fire did not cause any major damage. It apparently sparked after an insulator was contaminated.

Early said snow, wind and moisture created the perfect storm for the insulator to get contaminated and spark a blaze.

Utilities crews said it is important for drivers and residents to keep a look out. If something is out of place or a power pole is smoldering or smoking, call the utilities company or 911.
