UPDATE: Fallen Fort Carson Soldier Remembered

Sgt. Daniel Brown had gotten married, became a father and was in line for a promotion when he was killed in action last weekend, according to his tank commander.

Brown, 27, of Jerome, Idaho, died last Saturday in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Brown’s commander, Cpt. Thomas Peabody, spoke to KRDO NewsChannel 13 by phone on Tuesday. Peabody said the two had known each other for 18 months, and that Brown married his wife — who recently gave birth to twin girls — just before his deployment last spring.

Brown was expected to return home next month to see his daughters for the first time, Peabody said.

“He gave up more than anyone would ever want to or have to,” Peabody said of Brown. “Everyone needs to know that he and his family sacrificed.”

Peabody said he last saw Brown three weeks ago when Brown was excited about his pending promotion to staff sergeant, and Peabody was returning home to move to a new unit.

“(Brown) deserved to be promoted long before that,” said Peabody. “Being a tank gunner is a pretty big honor for a sergeant.”

Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Peabody said Brown likely will be buried in his hometown of Jerome, Idaho.
