High Winds Cause Fires Across Southern Colorado

A combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures caused several fires across southern Colorado on Monday.

The following is a list of fires we’re tracking. ——————————————————————————————————————— Pueblo County fire crews responded to a structure fire at 11th Street and Fisher Avenue around noon.

An auto body shop caught fire after the owner tried to burn some trash. The wind caused two cars and the building to catch on fire. The owner will be cited for an illegal burn. That fire has been extinguished and the picture in this article shows the damage to the building. ——————————————————————————————————————— In Custer County, a 3-acre fire is burning on private land in Wetmore. Florence Fire Department, Wetmore Volunteer Fire Dept., and Westcliffe Fire crews are all responding to the fire. Scanner traffic indicates that crews are getting a good handle on this fire around 3:30 p.m. ——————————————————————————————————————— Another fire sparked in Pueblo County later Monday afternoon. The rural fire started at 21st Lane and Clearview Drive in a river bottom. We’re working to get more information on the status of this fire. ——————————————————————————————————————— There were also several small grass fires in Colorado Springs. The fire was in the median on southbound Powers south of Aeroplaza. It blocked the left lane of Powers for a short time while crews extinguished the fire. Another fire sparked on Powers north of Hancock. That fire is blowing smoke across northbound lanes of Powers. ——————————————————————————————————————— CSFD responded to a structure fire at 1220 Oak Hills Drive just after 4 p.m. The home is in a neighborhood in the area of W Woodmen Rd and W Rockrimmon Blvd. The fire is now under control. The Fire Dept. says two people were in the home at the time but were able to escape without injuries. The amount of damage and what caused the fire is unknown.
