$1 Per Month For Abortion Coverage?

New questions and fears about the health care law that will firmly take root in 2014. I chatted with Southern Colorado Congressman, Doug Lamborn on the phone from his Washington D.C. office. He told me of a dollar per month charge for abortion coverage in the government mandated health exchange that will be offered to those who will pay for insurance if they don’t have insurance provided through their employer. Lamborn said, “There’s no way around it, they have pay whether it’s morally objectionable or not.”

The big fear is that you could be forced to buy something you don’t want. That’s why I contacted Erin Shields with the Department of Health and Human Services. She told me, “When you are shopping on the health care exchange, it is required by the health care law that the plan on the exchange has the specifics of what is covered including elective abortions.” Shields says there are no hidden costs. It’s called the summary of benefits and coverage. Shields say if you choose coverage that includes abortions, the law doesn’t have a specific dollar figure that’s mandated for you to pay. Each insurance provider would gauge that amount for its coverage. The law says, it may not be less than one dollar per month.

Shields went on to say, ?Under the new health care law, Federal funds continue not to be used for abortion services, except those in cases of rape or incest or where the life of the woman is endangered. No one will be required to choose a plan that covers these services and no taxpayer dollars will be spent on them. Before choosing a health plan, consumers will know whether the plan covers these services. And if it does, payments will be made into a separate account to ensure no federal dollars fund these services.?

Each individual state can decide if it wants abortion coverage offered in the government health care exchange. State Lawmakers can pass legislation to stop it. Voters can also push to stop this coverage in a general election. Remember, the health care exchange is up and running in 2014..
