District 11 Recommends Cutting All Literacy Resource Teacher Positions

KRDO NewsChannel 13 has learned that School District 11 is recommending the elimination of all 48 Literacy Resource Teacher positions in the district.

A source tells us the district called an emergency meeting of all the LRT’s this afternoon. All 48 LRT positions are recommended for elimination. The final decision will be made by the board before next year’s final budget is approved in June.

LRT’s provide teacher coaching, data interpretation and other duties related to increasing literacy across all classes.

Depending on seniority and their teaching abilities, some will still have jobs but will have to move to teaching in the classroom, filling vacant teacher positions.

The funding for the district’s LRT’s was approved as part of a previous mill levy override. The change is expected to be voted on in the Board of Education on Thursday.

The district says eliminating the position would contribute significantly to the total amount the district needs to reallocate in next year’s budget.
