Caucus Night For Colorado Democrats

Democrats gathered in Colorado for their caucuses Tuesday night, and even though there was no question about their presidential candidate, caucus goers said there was plenty of reason to be there.

“There’s always local issues and there’s always local candidates that want support,” said Irene Kornelly. “And it’s a good time to find out, at the grassroots level, what’s going on.”

“It’s always good to meet other Democrats, especially in a town this conservative,” said David Satin.

Democrats elected new precinct leaders as well as local delegates who will go on to the party conventions. Obama volunteers were also on hand at some caucus sites to recruit others who want to help.

“We want this as a first step in enthusiasm, motivation and getting behind our president,” said Kathleen Ricker, the chair of the El Paso County Democrats. “I think good turnout here gets everybody revved up to start the election year.”

Ricker said about 800 Democrats caucused in El Paso County. Pueblo County leaders said their turnout was more than 900. It was a more quiet caucus night in Teller County with just 25 people who came out.
