Alcohol Cited In Dropping Sex Charge At AF Academy

Air Force officials say testimony about alcohol consumption was among the reasons they decided not to prosecute an Air Force Academy cadet on sexual assault charges.

The Air Force announced last week it dropped charges against Kyle Cressy, a senior at the school outside Colorado Springs. Cressy was accused of assaulting a woman who was “substantially incapacitated” by alcohol in May.

In a statement released late Monday, the academy says an investigating officer assigned to Cressy’s case found no reasonable grounds to prosecute.

The officer cited testimony that the alleged victim wrote and sent a text message that she couldn’t recall, and expert testimony that it’s possible for someone to consent to sex and suffer an alcohol blackout preventing recall of the event.

Cressy’s attorney didn’t immediately return phone calls.
