UPDATE: US 50 Reopened After Deadly Accident

A deadly accident closed US 50 about 15 miles east of Pueblo for several hours on Thursday.

Colorado State Patrol says the crash involved a pickup truck, SUV, and an ambulance around noon. An ambulance from Rocky Ford was heading westbound on Hwy 50 near 51st Lane with two crew members and one patient. The ambulance attempted to avoid hitting a Dodge pickup truck that was stopped in the left turn lane. The front left of the ambulance hit the right rear of the pickup truck. The ambulance went off the north side of the road, rolling onto the its right side.

The impact forced the pickup truck into oncoming traffic and it hit a Mercury SUV. The SUV went off the south side of the road and rolled onto its roof.

The patient in the ambulance, an elderly male, was flown via helicopter to Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs. He was declared dead about an hour after the crash. The crew members of the ambulance, a 26-year-old male, a 47-year-old male, and two people in the SUV, a 40-year-old female and an 18-year-old male, were all taken to St. Mary Corwin in Pueblo with unknown injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, a 23-year-old male, was not injured.

Hwy 50 reopened around 3:30 p.m. but crews say delays are to be expected as the scene is being investigated and cleaned up.
