Strange Lights, Not Really!

Night lights over Fort Carson are not close encounterish or even close to Sci-Fi. I called the mountain post to confirm the origin of the lights. KRDO, NewsChannel 13 had hundred of facebook comments on them.

Lt. Col. Steve Wollman tells me the lights are what’s called illumination rounds. They are fired from mortars during Fort Carson regular training, downrange. Wollman says depending on a clear night, you could see them up to 20 miles. Wollman added that the illumination rounds have a bursting altitude above the ground several hundred meters. They are suspended underneath a parachute so they can hang up in the sky for a period of time.

These illumination rounds are used in battle to monitor the enemy and adjust strategy, accordingly.
