Fire In Colorado Springs Called Suspicious

Firefighters are investigating a fire that sparked at the Sunset Apartments as suspicious. The apartments are located off of N. Nevada and Garden of the Gods.

Two families have been displaced because of this blaze. The Red Cross is helping those families find places to stay.

Firefighters tell KRDO NewsChannel 13 the fire sparked in a first-floor apartment. It quickly spread outside the window to the second floor, and then to the roof.

Fire crews said no one was seriously injured, but there was a woman who was previously on oxygen who had trouble breathing. She was treated at the scene and is expected to recover.

Fire investigators said they consider this blaze suspicious because they are not sure of the cause and it spread so quickly. They said it was probably not an accidental fire.

All of the smoke alarms were working in the building, and that helped alert residents quickly.

Firefighters said families need to have safety plans in place. Parents should practice fire drills with their children and pick a meeting spot outside and away from their home or apartment.

This is the second fire that has sparked at the Sunset Creek Apartments this year. The first fire happened on January 28. It started after a woman left food burning on her stove.
