Arrest Made, Gun Returned To Local Olympian
The suspect in a competition gun robbery has been arrested and the gun has been returned to its owner.
On Feb. 27th, the suspect, now identified as Elias Matos, broke into Eli Bremer’s vehicle while it was parked at a local park. Matos allegedly broke out a window and took numerous items of value, including a competition air pistol.
Eli Bremer of Colorado Springs competed in the modern pentathlon during the 2008 Summer Olympics, and is preparing to qualify for the 2012 games in London. Bremer said the gun is a necessity for him to attend Olympic qualifying events which begin next month, because a gun is specialized and personalized for its user. He valued the gun at $5,000.
Police say that Matos also used two of Bremer’s credit cards at a nearby store. The next day, police obtained video surveillance of the suspect making these fraudulent purchases.
On Wednesday, CSPD received a tip that identified the suspect and they were able to find his address. They recovered a stolen van and numerous items of stolen property in the home.
Among the stolen property was Bremer’s competition air pistol and the majority of other stolen property. These items have been returned to Bremer.
Matos was arrested and taken into custody on charges of First Degree Criminal Trespassing, Identity Theft, and Theft by Receiving.
