Car Crashes Into Waffle House

A man drives into a Colorado Springs Waffle House, leaving thousands of dollars of damage and startling restaurant patrons.

Witnesses said a man was driving erratically in the parking lot of the restaurant on Austin Bluffs Parkway around 2 p.m. Saturday, when he crashed into the side of the building.

“I thought he was going to hit me actually, but then he swerved into the building.” said Donald Cordova, who witnessed the accident. “He hit it pretty hard. (It) sounded like a big explosion, I saw smoke everywhere.”

The owner of the Waffle House, Richard Bruce, said the crash took out 7 feet of wall, but didn’t break any glass or harm any of his customers. He said there was one very close call. “Thank God a family in that particular booth had just left about one minute before with a couple of small children,” Bruce said.

Firefighters said the building is structurally safe and the driver didn’t damage any of the electrical wiring or the main support beam. Bruce said he will board it up and planned to keep the business open.
