CSFD: Crestone Fire Caused By Careless Smoking
According to Colorado Springs Fire Department, the fire that displaced residents of the Cheyenne Vista Apartments was caused by careless smoking.
Residents of 15 apartment units were evacuated during the fire Wednesday night.
The fire was reported just before 9:20 p.m. at the apartments located on Crestone Lane. Firefighters ordered everyone in building 340, a four-story structure, to leave after smoke and flames were seen in the floors of several units.
Fire department Lt. Jeff Sievers said the fire spread in space between the second-floor ceiling and the third-story wood floors. Strong winds and one side of the complex being above a cliff, hampered firefighters’ efforts.
The fire appeared to be under control by around 10:45 p.m.
Displaced tenants were sent to building 370 where their needs for shelter and clothing were assessed. One resident said he left wearing only a T-shirt and slacks.
Firefighters said there were an unknown number of pets unaccounted for, and efforts were being made to contact the owners who may have been away when the fire started.
Sievers said more than 50 firefighters responded to the scene and no one was injured.
