Drivers Struggle To Get Up Hills In Snowy Commute

Dozens of drivers struggled to make it up some of the big hilly areas in Colorado Springs Thursday morning.

Snow quickly turned to ice and slush on the roadways as it fell during the morning commute.

Two of the toughest areas to navigate were the intersections of Austin Bluffs Parkway and Barnes Road, and Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Union Boulevard.

The hill west of I-25 and West Fillmore Street was also closed for a short time.

There were also more than a dozen cars stuck on Garden of the Gods Road just west of North Nevada Avenue.

Drivers got stuck on the hill after stopping for a red light. They had trouble getting enough traction to make it up the hill.

Two semi-trucks were stuck in the middle lane for about half an hour.

Many drivers were sliding back down the roadway. Several good Samaritans got out of their cars and helped push drivers who were stuck.

One woman was waiting for her bus and helped push cars up the street. She said she is a Colorado native and loved seeing strangers helping strangers.

The sun was shining bright by late Thursday morning and warmer temperatures started melting the snow away.

Drivers said it is always smart to allow extra time when it is snowing, even when conditions do not look bad.
