Consigner Beware

Donna Dickson just wanted to sell some of her household items to make a little extra money. So she took them to Rebecca?s Antiques, a store in Woodland Park that took items on consignment.

Dickson turned over several items to Rebecca Plemons, who said she would try to sell the items in her store, and give Dickson a portion of the profit.

A few weeks later, Rebecca?s Antiques was closed and everything inside was gone.

?The more I find out about this lady, the more upset I really become,? said Dickson. ?She?s been allowed to get away with this, you know, over and over, and nobody seems to do anything.?

Dickson learned that Plemons had operated different consignment stores in Colorado and Texas under different names, including Uniques & Antiques and Rebecca?s Antiques.

?I want to warn other people to be on the lookout for this lady,? said Dickson. ?Apparently this is the way she makes her living, going from town to town and stealing from people. I called the police. The police do not want to get involved. They say it’s a civil matter.?

Dickson also spoke to a woman at the Better Business Bureau. ?(She) said that if we can prove intent or a pattern, it should therefore be a criminal case, so that?s what I?m pushing for,? said Dickson. ?I?m trying to find somebody who will help us.?

?I know there?s more people down around the southwest corner of the state,? said Dickson.

KRDO tracked Plemons down at her new location, in Lake George, 20 miles away from Woodland Park.

KRDO asked Plemons what she had done with the consigned merchandise.

?Oh okay,? Plemons responded. ?No, I told everybody I was going to move out here.?

?No, you did not tell everybody that,? Dickson interrupted.

?Okay,? conceded Plemons. ?I got the flu as soon as I got here, and I guess I forgot to call Donna (Dickson). But I called everybody else.?

?I actually have all the stuff that is going in the store in storage,? said Plemons.

KRDO asked Plemons why she kept changing business locations.

?That?s not anybody’s business,? said Plemons. ?It’s my businesses.?

Plemons did explain that her Woodland Park store just wasn?t doing well.

?I opened over there because he (the property manager) was trying to help me out. He gave me some free rent and things, but their location was so bad I couldn’t stay there.?

?I didn?t intend to move out of that space but the economy is bad right now, you know,? said Plemons. ?Everybody?s having a tough time, and so am I.?

Plemons said she is in the process of setting up shop at the Big Jim?s Lake George Inn.

?I’m not going to have any consignment and I?m not going to rent any space to anybody,? said Plemons.

She said she intends to sell her own ?personal inventory.?

Plemons said she would return Dickson?s items on Friday.

There are reputable consignment stores where you can buy and sell used clothes, furniture and household items. It?s important to do your research first.
