Strangers Help Family From Burning Home

Colorado Springs police said two people saved a family from a burning home Thursday night.

Police said two people were driving by the home on Jet Wing Drive when they noticed smoke traveling across the roadway in an odd way, police said.

The pair turned around to investigate. They saw flames coming out of the roof of the home and called 911.

Police said the pair then went to the front door of the home and pounded on the door until Salvador Gonzalez answered.

Gonzalez told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he had no idea his house was on fire.

“We couldn’t smell it,” he said. “The door was closed in the restroom, so it was all going in the attic and blowing out the vents.”

Police said the fire sparked above working smoke detectors in the home, so the detectors probably wouldn’t have helped in this case.

Gonzalez said he does not know the two men who warned him, but he thinks they are neighbors who live nearby.

The neighbors told Gonzalez that they were driving to buy cigarettes when they saw the smoke and flames.

The Gonzalez family is still living in their home, but there is quite a bit of damage to their upstairs bathroom, attic and part of their roof.

Firefighters told Gonzalez that they think a rotor got stuck in a ceiling fan and sparked the blaze.

Gonzalez said he is thankful that he and his wife, their three daughters and dog were all able to get out safely.
