Sports Anchor Lee Douglas Remembered At Funeral
He loved to wear Hawaiian shirts, and along with his trademark beard and jolly smile, that’s what Lee Douglas was wearing in the photo on his funeral program Friday.
Douglas, 57, died last Saturday of kidney failure. The Pueblo native was a popular sports anchor at KOAA-TV News 5.
His funeral was held at Praise Assembly of God Church. Those he knew shared fond memories of him. One of those memories came from friend Nick Donovan, who recalled Douglas providing play-by-play analysis of a football game.
“He’s at the 10, the 20, the 30. Wait a minute, there’s a damn bee in here,” said Donovan, bringing laughter to the estimated audience of 550. “Then he went right on. That was Lee.”
The Bingo Burger restaurant honored Douglas in a unique way — by naming a sandwich after him. The Tribute Burger has beef, bacon, mushrooms and cheddar cheese.
“This is a classic burger joint and we know that (he) is also a Pueblo classic, traditional person,” said restaurant owner Richard Warner.
Samantha Torrez and her friends said they enjoyed the burger when they tried at lunch.
“I saw that some of the proceeds go to the Pueblo Boys & Girls Club. That’s always a good thing. This was a nice thing to do, to bring the community together,” Torrez said.
Warner said the burger has been so popular that it may become part of the regular menu.
Douglas was buried at Roselawn Cemetery.
